Here are the 5 steps we took to get ourselves into a beautiful room! Redoing our room has been so wonderful. It went from cluttered and stuffy to clean, open and serene! It is so nice and relaxing and I actually want to be in there now.
Step 1: Clean and Declutter.
This is probably the most important step, even if we hadn’t been able to do anything else. Having less stuff in the room made a huge change instantly. And by declutter, for me it was massively declutter. I gave away or tossed over 500 items in my bedroom alone. If I didn’t love it or need it, it went. It made such a difference! You can see the change the room went from so easily!
Step 2: Paint.
Painting is one of the cheapest ways to make a room beautiful. You may think that the paint is fine on the wall, but even a small colour change can make a big impact. I thought I loved the brown on my walls, as I am an earth tone type person, but knew that I needed a more open and airy feel to the room for showing it. After looking through maybe a million paint swatches, we went from my comfortable brown to a light grey-blue. The colour itself is Oldenburg from beauti-tone! I can’t believe how much of a difference it made. I am so so happy with the colour itself! And the paint was free for us, since we had bought so much paint for our other renos, we had collected enough points to get free paint!
I absolute love how light and airy it feels. Especially with the white trim and the light brown curtains we have.
Step 3: Bedding
I then obsessively hit up pintrest looking for ideas on how to make my bed have a hotel bed feel. The key was layers and pillows! We had a white duvet, and white pillows already, but I wanted a little pop of the greyish blue colour. With 7 kids and a house to reno to sell, I was on a bit of a budget so I didn’t really want to splurge and spend a ton.
I happened across a beautiful knit throw blanket at a local shop that was regularly $30 on sale for $10! This was an incredible steal, because I bought two in the same blue-grey and simply sewed them together! Which made a knit blanket large enough for our king sized bed for only $20.
I then made a pair of throw pillows, using two pillow forms I got on sale for $5 each, and some light blue-grey linen that I had in my stash, a little bit of burlap and some lace!
There are loads of tutorials on how to make a basic pillowcase, I just found a few on pintrest that I gleaned from and then went to work!
They turned out pretty cute!
Finally, I added a pair of extra pillows to the bed, with some similar tone blue-grey pillow cases I found on sale for $3/pair, which really finished off the look!
Step 4: Simple artwork
My bedroom had been super cluttered with art and items on the walls. You can’t really see it in the before photos, but I had things all over the place! I knew with selling the house we had to depersonalize a little bit, so I took down absolutely everything (we had to paint anyway!) and made a simple distressed map to go above the bed! You can see the tutorial I made for it here.
Having less on the walls made a very peaceful room. I kept our wedding cake topper on the small corner floating shelf as well but that is it!
Step 5: Open the curtains and bring in some natural light!
This sounds so simple, but truly if you take the time to just open up the curtains, and let in the natural light, your bedroom will transform into a beautiful place!
