I decided to take a few minutes today to whip up a batch of homemade fruit snacks for my kids and thought it would be a fun post to share the recipe! It is probably by far my favourite snack to make the kids. It goes a long way (one small batch makes multiple snacks for my seven hungry kids!) and tastes absolutely amazing, yet has things you would probably have around the house!
Step 1: Ingredients. You only need 3! How simple is that? For this Strawberry Sunshine fruit snack, you will need equal parts applesauce and strawberries. I didn’t quite have as many strawberries as I did applesauce but it was fine. For this batch, I used about 2 cups of unsweetened applesauce, and about 1 3/4 cups of thawed strawberries. Then I also have 2 tbsp of raw unprocessed honey.
Warm the honey by placing the container it is in, into warm water to melt it (unless you have liquid honey), then pour all of your ingredients into a mixing bowl!
Mix using an immersion blender (or you can mix in your blender, food processor, or even with a whisk if you can mash the berries enough!)
I like to bring it to a nice smooth consistency. This way it dehydrates evenly and you aren’t left with “sticky” bits.
Once it is smooth, pour it onto non-stick parchment or silicone about 1/4″ thick (this batch made 3 of these sheets full!).
Next it is time to dehydrate! You can do this on the lowest temperature in the oven overnight or use a dehydrator. For the longest time I would do it in the oven until my husband spoiled me with my dehydrator so I know that both ways work!
You will know it is done when the fruit blend is thin and loses its sheen. When you pull it off, it shouldn’t stick to the paper (if it does, it needs a little more time). It should come off and feel just like the fruit roll ups from the 80’s (my favourite lol!)
Once peeled off, I place the piece of fruit on a sheet of fresh parchment and roll the entire thing up. Then, I cut off 1″ pieces with kitchen scissors and place them in a bag! This batch made about 25 1″ pieces, and my kids lamented because they were hoping I was making a triple batch!
Here it is once it is peeled off the paper! So so yummy!
I hope you and your little ones enjoy this too!
